Level 1 charging uses the cable that comes with your EV, plugged into a standard 120V household outlet. No electrical work required, but it is slow, typically adding only 3 to 5 miles of range per hour. A full charge from a low battery can take well over 24 hours.

Level 2 charging runs on a dedicated 240V circuit, the same voltage as an electric dryer or range. On a 60A circuit, a Level 2 charger delivers up to 48A and 11.5kW, adding up to 44 miles of range per hour, enough for a full overnight charge on nearly any EV.

Most EV owners drive more than a short commute, or want the flexibility to skip a night without worrying about range. It also matters if you added an EV after your household already has one, since two vehicles sharing a Level 1 outlet rarely keeps up. Because of that, a Level 2 charger closes the gap and finishes a full charge in a few hours instead of a full day.
